Music. Madness. And Matchstick Men.

We are in the process of producing our CD Release Show!  There is a lot of energy surrounding this particular time in our musical journey.  James and I love learning new things, and stepping of our comfort zone.  We are so lucky to be working with two fantastic musicians, Karsten Priebe on drums and Nathan Sawatsky on bass, they are rounding out our sound.  It is thrilling to be playing full band for this event!  It’s been a while since we’ve had the chance for that.  James and I have had to rediscover ourselves a little bit in the process of recording our CD.  It became so much bigger than we first imagined.  It’s a challenge to translate that into our duo shows.  So it is refreshing to play out and to play loud.  Anyway, here are a few thoughts on life and our perspective right now:

Music: Our job as musicians is to translate emotion, colour, and dare I say… truth. Okay, that sounds a little on the pretentious side!  Not my intention.  James and I have had very diverse experiences as musicians.  I started out singing classical music, but ended up falling in love with rock ‘n’ roll.  James’ foundation started with the glue that holds bands together, the bass guitar, and moved into songwriting, singing and any other instrument he could get his hands on.  We play together, because we end up in the same place when we do.  A place of grace, expression and connection with other humans.

Madness:  We decided on a career in music because this is the job for us.  Duh.  Music is where our expertise, talent and passion come together.  It’s challenging to step out into something so important to us.  It’s challenging to rise above the natural inclination to justify your choice to your peers, but we are striving to live in a different state of mind.  We would like to be the kind of people who motivate others to live in possibility. Maybe it’s madness, maybe it’s idealism, whatever it is, it gets us up out of bed every morning, looking forward to the day.

Matchstick Men: One of my fave movies.  Sometimes I get Nic Cage’s voice in my head saying, “Pygmies!”  And it makes me laugh out loud, and I’m usually in a public place when that happens, so I get some weird looks… Ha!  I loved the characters in that movie, a story about insecurities and survival.  And a liberal dose of hilarity at how ridiculous we humans can be!!  Stories like that are quirky and inspire me to love this life, not take it too seriously.
